📿 Satyanarayan Katha

Vishnu vrat katha

Also called Satyanarayan Puja · Satyanarayana Vratam · सत्यनारायण कथा

The Satyanarayan Katha is a vrat and recitation performed in honour of Lord Vishnu in his form as Satyanarayan, the embodiment of truth. It is among the most widely performed household rituals in India — held in gratitude after a wish is fulfilled, at the start of something new, or simply as a periodic act of devotion that gathers the family and neighbours in one room.

When the katha is performed

Purnima, the full-moon day, is the traditional occasion, and Kartik, Vaishakh, Shravan and Chaitra purnima are considered especially auspicious. Ekadashi and Sankranti are also common. That said, the katha carries no restriction of season or nakshatra, which is why families hold it after a wedding, a new job, a recovery from illness, a house move, or the birth of a child.

It is a vrat as much as a puja: the host family fasts through the day, taking only fruit and milk, and breaks the fast with the prasad once the katha is complete.

What happens during the ceremony

After Ganesh puja and the sankalp naming the family and their intention, the pandit performs kalash sthapana and invokes Lord Satyanarayan along with the navagraha. The katha itself follows — five chapters from the Skanda Purana, each a story about what follows when a promise to hold the vrat is kept, and what follows when it is forgotten. The stories of the poor brahmin, the woodcutter, the merchant Sadhu and his son-in-law, and the cowherds are read aloud while everyone present listens.

A havan follows the recitation in most households, then aarti and the distribution of prasad. The prasad is the well-known sheera or panchamrit — wheat flour roasted in ghee with sugar and milk, or a mixture of milk, curd, honey, ghee and sugar — and by custom everyone present must receive some before the gathering disperses.

What to arrange at home

A low wooden chowki for the deity, a clean cloth, banana leaves or stems for the canopy if you want the traditional mandap, a kalash, panchamrit ingredients, tulsi leaves, flowers, fruit, betel nut and leaves, and the ingredients for the sheera. Your pandit sends the complete list once the booking is confirmed.

The katha is meant to be heard rather than watched, so seat the family where everyone can follow the recitation. Neighbours and friends are traditionally invited — the merit of the vrat is understood to extend to everyone who listens.

Satyanarayan Katha — common questions

How long does the Satyanarayan Katha take?

About two hours for the puja, the five chapters of the katha, the havan and aarti. Skipping the havan brings it closer to ninety minutes.

Do we have to fast for the Satyanarayan vrat?

The host family traditionally fasts on the day, taking only fruit and milk, and breaks it with the prasad. Guests who come to listen are not expected to fast.

Can the katha be performed in the evening?

Yes. Evening is common precisely because more of the family and neighbours can attend. The pandit will suggest a start time that lets the aarti fall in the sandhya period.

Can Satyanarayan Katha be done online?

Yes. The pandit performs the puja and recites the full katha over video call, guiding you through the sankalp and the offerings you make at your own altar.
