Navagraha Shanti is performed to pacify the nine planetary deities — Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Budh, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu and Ketu — whose positions Vedic astrology holds responsible for the run of ease or obstruction in a person's life. The ritual does not claim to change a horoscope. It is understood as an act of propitiation: strengthening the grahas placed weakly in a chart and calming those placed harshly.

When Navagraha Shanti is recommended
Families most often perform it when a specific period is difficult — a stretch of illness, repeated setbacks at work, obstacles in a marriage proposal, or litigation that will not settle. It is also performed on the advice of an astrologer during a mahadasha or antardasha of a troublesome planet, during Sade Sati, or when a chart shows a graha in debilitation.
It is equally common as a preventive, folded into a larger ceremony. Griha Pravesh, Vivah Sanskar and Bhoomi Pujan almost always include a navagraha puja within them, which is why some families find they have already performed part of it without naming it separately.
What happens during the ceremony
The pandit begins with Ganesh puja, sankalp and kalash sthapana, then establishes the navagraha mandala — nine positions laid out in a fixed square arrangement, each with the metal, grain, cloth colour and direction assigned to that planet. Each graha is invoked in turn and offered its own mantra, the count depending on the strength of the remedy sought.
The jaap is followed by a havan, where the samidha wood specific to each planet is offered into the fire: arka for Surya, palash for Chandra, khadira for Mangal, and so on through the nine. The ceremony closes with purnahuti, aarti and the giving of daan — the grains, cloth or items associated with the afflicted planet, donated afterwards, which the tradition treats as part of the remedy rather than an optional extra.
What to arrange, and what to tell your pandit
Share the birth details — date, time and place — of the person the pooja is for when you book, along with any astrologer's note you are working from. The pandit needs these to decide which grahas to emphasise and how many repetitions of each mantra the remedy calls for. Without them the ritual is performed in its general form, which is valid but not targeted.
At home you will need space for a havan kund, the nine grains, nine cloths, ghee, samidha and the usual puja articles. The full samagri list comes from your pandit once the booking is confirmed, itemised by planet so nothing is missed.

How long does Navagraha Shanti take?
Around two and a half hours for the puja, jaap and havan. A remedy calling for a high mantra count for a specific planet can run considerably longer, and the pandit will tell you in advance.
Do I need my birth chart to book this pooja?
It helps a great deal. Date, time and place of birth let the pandit target the grahas that are actually afflicted. Without them the pooja is performed in its general form.
Can Navagraha Shanti be performed for someone who cannot attend?
Yes. The sankalp is taken in that person's name and gotra, and a family member sits in their place. This is routine when the person is unwell or living abroad.
Is a separate Shani puja needed as well?
Navagraha Shanti already includes Shani among the nine. A separate Shani Shanti is usually performed only when an astrologer has specifically asked for it during Sade Sati or a Shani dasha.
