Griha Pravesh is the Vedic housewarming ceremony performed before a family first lives in a newly built or newly bought home. Its rituals mark the moment a house stops being a structure and becomes a dwelling — formally offered to the deities, settled of any vastu imbalance, and asked to hold health, peace and prosperity for everyone who will live in it.

When Griha Pravesh is performed
Tradition recognises three forms of the ceremony. Apoorva Griha Pravesh is the first entry into a newly constructed house on fresh land. Sapoorva is the return to a home the family already owns after a long absence. Dwandwah is entry into a house restored after fire, flood or major damage. Which one applies changes the sankalp the pandit recites, though the body of the ritual is much the same.
The date matters as much as the ritual. Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha and Jyeshtha are generally favoured months, while the four months of Chaturmas are usually avoided for a first entry. Your pandit checks the tithi, nakshatra and the family's details before fixing a muhurat, and will tell you if the date you have in mind is unsuitable rather than simply agreeing to it.
What happens during the ceremony
The ritual begins at the threshold, outside the house. Ganesh puja and kalash sthapana come first, invoking an auspicious start and establishing the sacred pot. The lady of the house then carries a kalash of water topped with a coconut and mango leaves across the threshold, entering with the right foot, while the pandit chants the entry mantras.
Inside, milk is boiled on the new stove until it flows over — the household's first act of cooking and a sign of abundance that will not stop at the brim. Navagraha puja follows, then a havan in the main room, with offerings made into the fire for each deity invoked. Vastu shanti settles the eight directions of the house and asks forgiveness for any disturbance the construction caused. The ceremony closes with purnahuti, aarti, and prasad shared among everyone present.
What to arrange at home
You will need a clean room for the havan with space for the family to sit around the fire, plus a kalash, coconut, mango leaves, roli, akshat, ghee, flowers, fruit, new utensils, and a stove ready for that first pot of milk. The pandit assigned to your booking sends the full samagri list well before the date, so nothing is bought twice or forgotten on the morning.
The family traditionally bathes before the ceremony and eats only after the prasad is offered. It is also customary to spend that first night in the house rather than returning elsewhere — the ceremony marks the beginning of living there, not a visit.

What is the best time of day for Griha Pravesh?
A morning muhurat is preferred, and the ceremony should finish before sunset. The exact window depends on the tithi and nakshatra for your date, which the pandit calculates once the booking is confirmed.
How long does a Griha Pravesh pooja take?
About three hours for the full ceremony including the havan. Add time if you are hosting a bhandara or inviting a large gathering afterwards.
Can Griha Pravesh be performed in a rented flat?
Yes. The vastu shanti and the main puja are performed as usual; the pandit adapts the parts of Apoorva Griha Pravesh that assume ownership of newly built property.
Do we need to move in immediately after the ceremony?
Traditionally the family spends that night in the house. If that is not possible, tell the pandit when you book and he will guide you on what to do instead.
