Bhoomi Pujan is performed on the site before construction begins — the ceremony in which permission is sought from Bhoomi Devi to build on her, and from the beings held to already occupy the ground. It is the first of the rites associated with a building, and Griha Pravesh at the end is its counterpart: one asks leave to start, the other asks blessing to live there.

When and where it is performed
The ceremony is held on the site itself, before any digging or foundation work. Vaishakh, Shravan, Margashirsh, Magh and Phalgun are the months generally favoured, and the pandit fixes a muhurat after checking the tithi and nakshatra against the owner's details.
It applies to more than houses. Families and businesses hold Bhoomi Pujan before building a shop, a factory, an office or a temple, and the vidhi is broadly the same — what changes is the sankalp naming what is being built and for whom.
What happens during the ceremony
The pandit begins in the north-east corner of the plot, the direction assigned to Ishaan, with Ganesh puja, sankalp and kalash sthapana. Vastu puja follows, addressing Vastu Purusha and the deities of the eight directions, and Naag puja is performed for the serpent held to bear the earth — a silver or copper naag and kalash are commonly buried at the corner as part of this rite.
Shilanyas comes next: the ceremonial laying of the first stone or brick, along with the deposit of a copper kalash containing coins, grains, turmeric and a betel nut into the foundation pit. A havan is then performed on the site, followed by purnahuti and aarti. Digging traditionally begins immediately afterwards, by the owner's own hand for the first stroke.
What to arrange at the site
Level and clear the north-east corner in advance and arrange shade if the muhurat falls in the middle of the day — sites rarely have any. You will need bricks or the foundation stone, a copper kalash, coins, grains, turmeric, a silver naag if you are following that custom, ghee, samidha and the usual puja articles. Your pandit sends the full list once the date is fixed.
The plot owner should be present, as the sankalp is taken in their name. Where a builder is performing the ceremony on the owner's behalf, tell the pandit when you book so the sankalp is worded correctly.

Should construction start on the same day?
Traditionally yes — the first digging is done immediately after the ceremony, with the owner making the first stroke. Continuous work can begin afterwards at your builder's pace.
Is Bhoomi Pujan needed if we are buying a ready-built house?
No. Bhoomi Pujan is for ground that is about to be built on. For a completed house you want Griha Pravesh, which includes the vastu shanti rites.
Can Bhoomi Pujan be performed for a commercial site?
Yes, and it is common before building a shop, factory or office. The vidhi is the same; the sankalp names what is being built and the person or business it is for.
