Ganesh Puja is the invocation of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, and it is the rite that opens almost every other Hindu ceremony. Nothing of consequence begins without it: no wedding, no housewarming, no havan, no new shop or vehicle. Performed on its own, it is the ritual families choose at the start of anything they want to go well.

When Ganesh Puja is performed
Ganesh Chaturthi is the largest occasion, when the murti is installed at home for one and a half, three, five, seven or ten days before visarjan. Outside that festival, families hold the puja before moving into a home, opening a business, starting construction, buying a vehicle, before a child's first day of school or study, and at the start of the financial year.
Chaturthi — the fourth tithi of each fortnight — and Wednesdays are the recurring days associated with Ganesha for households that perform it regularly.
What happens during the ceremony
The pandit begins with achaman and sankalp, then pran pratishtha if a murti is being installed — the rite by which the image is invited to hold the deity's presence rather than remain clay. The shodashopachara follows: sixteen offerings made in order, from the seat and the water for washing the feet through to clothing, sandal paste, flowers, incense, lamp and food.
Durva grass is offered in twenty-one blades, the offering most particular to Ganesha, along with modak or laddoo. The Ganapati Atharvashirsha is recited, and where the family wants a havan, offerings are made into the fire with the Ganapati mantras. The puja ends with aarti and prasad.
During Ganesh Chaturthi the same pandit can return for the visarjan, performing the uttar puja and the formal farewell before the murti is immersed.
What to arrange at home
A Ganesh murti or image, a chowki with a clean red or yellow cloth, durva grass, modak or laddoo, red flowers and hibiscus if available, roli, akshat, betel leaves and nut, coconut, incense and a lamp. The pandit sends the full list before the date.
If you are installing a murti for Ganesh Chaturthi, decide the number of days before you book so the visarjan puja is scheduled at the same time and you are not arranging it at the last moment.

How long does Ganesh Puja take?
About ninety minutes for the puja with the Atharvashirsha recitation and aarti. Adding a havan takes it to roughly two hours.
Can the same pandit come back for the visarjan?
Yes. Tell us the number of days when you book the sthapana and we schedule the uttar puja and visarjan with the same pandit.
Is Ganesh Puja needed before other poojas we have booked?
It is already included. Every ceremony we arrange opens with a Ganesh puja as part of the vidhi, so you only book it separately when it is the ceremony itself.
