महत्व · Significance
Ekadashi falls on the eleventh tithi of each lunar fortnight, so it comes twice in a month — once in the waxing Shukla Paksha and once in the waning Krishna Paksha. It is kept as a fast in honour of Bhagwan Vishnu.
The observance is as much about restraint as ritual. Grains and pulses are traditionally set aside for the day, and the hours that would go to eating and preparing food are given to reading, chanting and stillness instead.
The fast is not broken whenever the devotee chooses. It ends at parana, a window on the following morning that depends on the tithi and on sunrise, which is why the parana time is published for each Ekadashi rather than fixed.
पूजा विधि · How it is kept
- Bathe before sunrise and take the sankalp — the resolve to keep the fast.
- Offer tulsi patra, flowers and fruit to Bhagwan Vishnu; tulsi is central to the offering.
- Light a ghee lamp and read or listen to the Vishnu Sahasranama.
- Keep the fast according to your capacity — nirjala without water, phalahar with fruit, or a single sattvic meal.
- Break the fast only during the parana window on the next morning.
